In light of the city’s financial crisis, Woonsocket is shutting off up to a third of the city’s streetlights. A Woonsocket official says the measure will save the city up to one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. He added that little savings would be seen at first, since National Grid is charging the city a shutoff fee of twenty-five dollars per fixture.
RI Secretary of State Ralph Mollis (D) announced his intention to seek a second term in a story in today's Providence Journal and a post to his Facebook page.
I've had a number of interactions with Mollis's office over the last couple of years, and have always been impressed with their openness and responsiveness. On several occasions, I have asked for information or interpretations, and they have always gotten back to me promptly. They even kept track of the kind of stuff I'm interested in and proactively sent me notices. I also think Mollis has done a particularly good job with online resources for elections, especially the election calendar and candidate guides, which are great if you're trying to make sense of this process.
You can find the new Mollis2010 site here.
Full disclosure: I believe that I am likely a member of the shadowy group referred to in a quote attributed to Larry Fitzmorris by the Newport Daily News describing the "core of the Democratic Party." You have been warned. :)

President Obama’s jobs bill is expected to be signed into law today. The bill gives companies who hire unemployed workers a tax break and extends highway and mass transit programs through the end of the year. Congress, with support from both sides of the isle, easily approved the bill yesterday, and it could generate some two hundred and fifty thousand jobs by the end of the year.

From RI Jobs With Justice:
The owners of the Westin Hotel have imposed a contract on Westin workers that cuts wages twenty percent for all workers, raises employees’ health insurance costs (triples or quadruples the cost), and significantly cuts employees’ sick days, vacations and holidays. This contract also threatens Westin hotel workers’ job security by authorizing subcontracting.
Rally, Thursday March 18th @ 4pm

Hello Gardeners!
If you’ve signed up for a plot but haven’t heard from me, here’s why: Last week I wrote all of the current gardeners to see who wants to stay on for the 2010 season. I’ve heard from almost all of them, and as soon as I have everything squared up, I’ll start handing out assignments.
This year, I’ll be reassigning abandoned plots in late July for Summer/ Fall harvests. If I can’t fit you in for the Spring, I’ll get you in on the Fall. There’s a lot of great news to come and I’m sure there’s a place for everyone.
If you are a member already and wouldn’t mind sharing your plot, let me know. Also, you may lend your plot to a person on the wait list if you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time.
Regardless, if you would like a plot, please register on the waitlist, as I will be giving plots on a first-come basis.
Happy Spring!
