The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre board of directors, along with honorary chairs First Lady of Pawtucket Laureen Grebien and Political Commentator Maureen Moakley, invite arts supporters to The Snow Ball, the theater's 10th annual fundraising party, on Saturday, February 18 at 6 p.m.

Emceed by WRNI General Manager Joe O'Connor, and billed as "the hottest party in the coldest month," The Snow Ball brings the outdoors indoors, transforming a historic Pawtucket mill into the Arctic North.  The venue, at 65 Blackstone Avenue, Pawtucket, RI, is located just a snow ball's throw from the theater. Highlights are winter-themed food and drinks, hot tunes to shake off your winter blues and cool raffle prizes, as well as silent and live auctions starting online at www.biddingforgood.com/gammtheatre.
"Soliloquio" by Toots Zynsky.
Featured auction items include a glass sculptural vessel by renowned artist Toots Zynsky, created especially for The Snow Ball (pictured). World-famous for her signature "filet-de-verre" technique, Zynsky's one-of-a-kind sculpture will be available for preview at BankRI Gallery, 137 Pitman St., Providence, starting February 2.

Other distinctive items include a week-long stay at a vacation home on the Caribbean Island of Eleuthera, Bahamas, with private beach access; an overnight stay at the New York Athletic Club with a pair of tickets to see the Tony Award-winning play War Horse; and a limited-edition single-malt whiskey fabricated to resemble the Scotch that explorer Ernest Shackleton took with him to the Antarctic in 1907, as written about in The New York Times. Absentee bidding on all items is permitted.

Two-tiered tickets are on sale now at gammtheatre.org or by calling 401-723-4266, ext. 16. Ranger Talk Series

Museum of Work & Culture

Market Square, 42 South Main Street

Woonsocket, RI
(401)769-9675

On Sunday, January 15, 2012, the Museum of Work & Culture launches the first of this year's Ranger Talks.  Begun in 1998, the program consists of  a series of six lectures and presentations from January through April, sponsored by the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor in cooperation with the Rhode Island Historical Society.

Betty & Carlo Mencucci kick off the 15th annual Ranger Talk series on January 15 with their presentation of "West of the Seven Mile Line - A History of Glocester."  Using beautiful videography, old photos, interviews, and stunning aerial shots, visitors will virtually tour the villages of Glocester and learn some amazing history.

The presentation goes back to the 1600's when the area we know today as Glocester was a howling wilderness called the "Outlands" or the land "West of the Seven Mile Line."  Some of the stories covered will be the Mehunganug Swamp tragedy when some of the first settlers clashed with the Nipmuc Indians; how the Revolutionary War impacted the lives of Glocester citizens; and how the eyes of the country were focused on Chepachet during the Dorr Rebellion.

The Ranger Talk lecture schedule is as follows:

  • January 15: "West of the Seven Mile Line - A History of Glocester" by Carlo and Betty Mencucci
  • January 29: Rhea Bouchard Powers presents "Rhea's Random Reflections"
  • February 12: Paul Bourget presents "Civil War Sanitary Commission"
  • February 26: Sarah Zuier presents "Green Zones:  Rhode Islanders Gardens in War Time"
  • March 11: National Park Ranger Kevin Klyberg presents "RI and the War of 1812"
  • April 1: Former Woonsocket resident Chip Bishop presents a talk on his newly released book "The Lion and the Journalist"

The one hour long Ranger Talks are held on Sundays at 1:30 pm in the museum's ITU Hall.  All talks are free and open to the public.  For more information contact the museum at 401-769-9675.

The Nields  -  Nerissa and Katryna Nields grew up singing folk songs in the kitchen and in the back seat of the family car. From those humble beginnings the Nields have been the darlings of the coffeehouse/festival scene since 1991, with tunes ranging from off-the-hook idiosyncratic to kicking to heartbreaking. They’ve played at large venues like Lillith Fair, and at large festivals including the Newport Folk Festival. Come to see them up close and personal at Stone Soup.
